How To Practice The Bass In Your Dead Time
Q: HOW DO YOU GET TO CARNEGIE HALL?
A: PRACTICE, MAN, PRACTICE
We all know that, right? We know that if we want to get better we've got to practice? And if you've read my book Deliberate Practice you know that it's not just enough to practice, but you have to practice the right material. You have to practice in the Learning Zone.
The studies that I drew on in writing that book suggest that to be a virtuoso you have to put in approximately 10,000 Hours of Deliberate Practice in your chosen field. And so you know, 10,000 hours equates to around 3 hours of practice a day. Every day of the week. Every week of the year. For 10 years.
And that's the real problem for most of us. We're not students anymore, with hours of time that we can put in to practicing the bass. Most of us have got real world responsibilities that are time consuming - jobs, families, friends. And if you're like me then you can set aside a small amount of time to practice each day when you're not working, or looking after the kids, or spending time with your better other half.
But there's always that feeling:
It's never enough.
What if you could get 125 hours of extra practice time this year? What kind of difference would that make to your bass playing? (So you know, 125 hours is approximately 30 minutes of extra practice, 5 times a week, 50 weeks of the year). Seriously would that help you in your goal of getting better at the bass?
You bet it would!
But I know what you're going to say: I already get up earlier in the morning so I can practice. Or I already stay up later at night so I can practice. Or the only way I could do that would be by sacrificing time with the kids (though some days, that seems kind of attractive right?
).
What if I told you that not only could I give you that time, but I could give it you in such a way that you could do that practice whilst you were driving to work, or on the train, or exercising, or doing a gazillion things that you have to do every day? You'd probably think I'd been drinking or worse.
Well think again my bass playing friends.
