Building Basslines- Lesson 3OK in Lesson 2 of the Building Basslines series we looked at some variations of the basic I:IV (one-four) progression in different keys, and we played them with just root notes and in an 8th note rhythm. In this lesson we're going to look at a chord progression called the I:IV:V (the one-four-five). We're also going to add another note choice to the mix and use the octave (which is the same note as the root , but at a different pitch). Here's the Lesson video:
The I:IV:V progression is found in all different genres of music and in many combinations. Here's a really basic version. This is a classic Blues Progression in A and on the video I demonstrate it with a 'classic' walking bass line - both are sounds I'm sure you're familiar with. Here's the I:IV:V progression in A - each 'box represents a bar.
Action Plan OK, this week's action plan is to enter the chords as above into Band in a Box and generate your own backing track. Play along with the different combinations of Octave that I showed you on the video - get comfortable with them. Then use the transpose button on Band In A Box and transpose the progression into different keys and repeat. In Lesson 4 we're going to be looking at a really important combination of note - the root/5th/octave combination - and some more I:IV: progressions |
